# Closed Captions
Closed captions display a real-time text version of what people are saying in a room, so participants can follow the conversation when audio is unclear, the environment is noisy, or reading along is simply easier.
Captions are turned on individually. Each person decides whether to use them, and turning them on also makes your own speech available as captions for everyone else in the room.
## **Turning captions on and off**
**Method 1 — Bottom bar**
Join the room.
On the **bottom bar**, click the **Captions** button (**CC**).
Captions begin appearing as participants speak. Click the button again to turn them off.
**Method 2 — Keyboard shortcut**
Press Alt + Shift + T to toggle captions without leaving the keyboard.
## **Display modes**
The arrow next to the Captions button opens a submenu where you choose how caption text is laid out. The setting applies to your own view only, and takes effect immediately.
### **Conversation**
All captions are collected into a single feed in the **lower-left corner** of the room, regardless of who is speaking. Lines appear one after another as people talk, reading like a running conversation.
### **Participants**
Each person's speech appears on **their own video tile**, so captions are attributed visually to the speaker rather than pooled in one place.
**Not supported on desktop apps, mobile, or dial-in.** Closed captions are a browser feature. Participants using a Coresee desktop application, joining from a mobile device, or dialling in by phone cannot turn captions on, and their speech will not be captioned for anyone else in the room.
